You can use the Google TV app on an Android phone to enter text on a compatible Android TV or Google TV. Pair the phone with the TV, open a text field on the TV, then try the phone keyboard. Google supports phone-based text entry, but a working direction pad alone doesn’t tell you whether a particular app’s search field will accept it. Google’s remote features
Start with a short search. Once you can see those letters arrive, type the long title.
Connect the phone first
Put the phone and TV on the same home Wi-Fi, with the TV switched on. This route is for Android TV and Google TV. Android TV setup requirements
Open the Google TV app, choose your TV from the connection button, enter the code on the TV and tap Pair. Google’s Android TV guide labels it Connect TV. Google’s pairing guide
Before going further, use a direction button and watch the TV highlight move. If you have more than one TV, this is also a useful check that you selected the right one.
Try one short search
Use the remote controls to open the TV app you want, move to its search field and select it. Look for an active text-entry field, rather than leaving the search icon highlighted.
When the phone offers its keyboard, enter a short word such as “jazz”. If your remote screen has a keyboard control, open it. Watch the TV: did the text arrive in the intended field? If it did, finish the query and use the available search or submit control.
If that field ignores the phone keyboard, use the checks below to find out whether the problem follows the field or the whole connection. Google’s phone-keyboard guidance
If the keyboard is missing
First, select the TV’s text field again. A page containing a search box isn’t the same as a box ready to receive text.
If you opened the remote from Android’s Quick Settings, try opening the Google TV app itself. Choose the same TV and revisit the same field. Google supports both entry points, so this gives you another way to reach the remote. Google’s remote entry points
Keep the TV app and search field unchanged during this comparison. Otherwise, you won’t know whether the difference came from the phone’s remote screen or the TV app.
If the keyboard appears but nothing arrives
Try the same short word in a second TV app’s text field. Then compare the results:
- Typing works in one field: you’ve found a working text-entry route. Note which app or field failed; don’t start changing the router because of that one result.
- Typing fails in both, but navigation works: record the two failures separately from the working direction controls. That is more useful for support than “the remote doesn’t work”.
- Navigation also fails: go back to the connection check. Confirm the selected TV and network before investigating individual apps.
For an unresponsive connection, Google recommends a TV restart: unplug, wait ten seconds, reconnect, then pair again. Let software updates finish first, and check that nobody is watching. Google’s virtual-remote troubleshooting
Still stuck? Capture the useful details
Write down the phone model, Android version, TV or streamer model, remote app version, and the exact TV app and field that failed. Include whether the keyboard was missing, whether letters appeared, and whether navigation still worked. Use a harmless sample query in any screenshot.

A phone-first option in beta
The Remote’s beta includes a phone-entered YouTube search that you send to a selected compatible Android TV or Google TV over your home network. It requires Android TV Remote Service v2; whether the TV accepts the search depends on the device and its YouTube version. Its dedicated YouTube search is useful when that’s the task you came to do.
