If you already have the video’s link, open it in the YouTube app on your Android phone and connect to the TV. The Remote beta offers another route for compatible Android TV and Google TV devices: share the link, review the destination, then choose the Open action for your selected TV.

You don’t need to type the title into the TV and hunt for the same video again.

Use YouTube for a link you already have

Open the link in YouTube’s Android app, with YouTube open on the TV and both devices on the same Wi-Fi. Tap Cast in the video player and choose the TV. Mobile-browser YouTube doesn’t support this route; Android 17 and later need local-device discovery permission. YouTube’s Android casting instructions

For different networks, use YouTube’s TV code: display it under Settings → Add a device on the TV, then enter it through Cast → Add a device on the phone. Tap Link and select the device. YouTube’s code-linking guide

Check the title and destination before sending it. You’ll need an existing way to open the TV’s settings for the code route, so it isn’t a shortcut around an unconfigured or unreachable TV.

Use The Remote’s share-and-review route

This route is for people who already have The Remote beta installed. You need an Android phone, a compatible Android TV or Google TV device with Android TV Remote Service v2, and a paired TV reachable on your local network. YouTube behaviour depends on the TV and its YouTube version. The Remote’s requirements

Share one video

Use the Android sharing option for the video or its link and choose The Remote. The share control’s location depends on whether you start in YouTube, a browser or a messaging app.

Share the video link itself. If a conversation contains several videos, choose the one you want first; a screenshot or whole conversation doesn’t identify the destination video reliably.

Check the link and the screen

Review the link and selected TV in The Remote. If you’ve saved several TVs, pick the room where you want to watch. Check that another person isn’t using that screen before you send anything.

If you copied the link from a conversation, check it against the original message before continuing.

Open it on the selected TV

When the link and destination are right, tap the Open action for that TV. The action sends the supported YouTube link to the selected compatible device.

Check the TV for the result. Its YouTube app, signed-in account and the video’s availability still determine playback. Your phone’s account, captions and playback position may not carry over.

If it stops along the way

The TV isn’t available: check the saved destination and home-network connection. If the TV still remembers an old Wi-Fi network, restore its connection before trying again.

The shared item isn’t accepted: open the original video in the YouTube phone app and use the connection route above. URL formats can differ: a working ordinary video link doesn’t establish that Shorts, playlists or timestamp parameters behave the same way.

YouTube opens but the video doesn’t play: read the message on the TV. A sign-in request, unavailable video or playback error needs resolving there before sending the link again.

The wrong TV received it: check that screen before retrying elsewhere. Correct the selected destination before the next Open action.

Give the link a destination

A shared video deserves a quick check before it reaches a bigger screen. The Remote keeps that choice explicit: review the link, choose the TV, then send it.
